A Short History of Etihad Airways

The UAE is not just famous for real estate and Dubai, it’s also well-known for the class of airline services they offer and Etihad Airways is no exception. It is the national flag carrier of UAE and the second largest airline of the UAE. Based in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi. Etihad commenced operations fairly recently in November of 2003 with two Boeing 767-300ERs. The airline has seen massive growth in a short amount of time and has built its success learning from its counterpart airlines Emirates. Shaikh Zayed An Nahyan wanted to have official airlines for Abu-Dhabi and thus initiated Etihad, its first flight was a domestic one from Abu Dhabi to Al-Ain in 2003. In 2004 the airlines placed an order for five Boeing 777-300ERs and 24 Airbus aircraft that included 4 Airbus A380s. The first Airbus A380 was delivered to Itehad Airline in December of 2014. Itehad also has the record of making the largest aircraft order in the history of commercial aviation when it placed an order for 205 aircraft that included 100 firm orders, 55 options and 50 purchase rights back in 2008 at the Farnborough Airshow. It went into full profit in 2014 with a net profit of $14 million and has not looked back since then. Etihad has also received numerous awards since its inception; in 2016 it was rated as one of the few 5-star airline services by Skytrax.

Etihad Airlines has received more than 30 awards since its inception in 2003. It received the Best Business Class award in 2009. It was also named the World’s Leading Airline in the same year. It received the award again in 2013.

Itehad cargo services have a dedicated fleet for cargo transport that include 5 Boeing B777F and 5 Airbus A330-200F. On average it delivered 368,000 tons of cargo in 2012. Currently, Etihad’s new facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport is equipped to handle more than 500,000 tons of cargo every year.
