Kuwait Airways Kuwait's National Airline

The following airline is one of the earliest ones in the Arabian Peninsula – Kuwait Airways. Having been founded in 1953 as Kuwait National Airways and Kuwait’s national carrier, this airline service has come a long way. It was first established by a group of businessmen along with 50% shares of the Kuwaiti government. They signed a contract with a subsidiary of British International Airlines for the management and maintenance service and started operations in 1954 with two Dakota Aircrafts.  In 1963 the government of Kuwait took over 100% of the operations of the airline. It has headquarters on the grounds of Kuwait International Airport in Al Fawaniyah Governorate, Kuwait. Although there have been several plans to privatize Kuwait Airlines it still has not been followed through. Some of its subsidiaries, however, have been privatized. It is also a part of the Arab Air Carriers Organization.

 

Fleet and Destinations

Having started off with two aircraft and having held many classic airplanes in its fleet through the years. Currently, the national airliner of Kuwait has 28 Aircraft consisting of Boeings and Airbuses. With 25 pending delivery. It has flights to 34 destinations in South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America with more to be added soon. Since Kuwait Airways serves as the official state airlines, it has a dedicated fleet for this purpose that consists of an Airbus A300-600, one A310-300, one A319, one A320, and one Boeing 747-8BBJ.

 

Services and Alliances

Kuwait Airlines offers services related to the airline industry, which is also under consideration to be privatized that include:

Kuwait Aviation Services Co. (KASCO) which includes it's on ground services as well as aircraft maintenance services.

Automated Systems Co. an independent GDS (Global Distribution System) that has been in operation since 1989 used for various reservations for airlines, hotels, etc. It also allows its own agencies both physical and virtual to check Kuwait Airways flight status. The system also allows for online activity, in turn, making Kuwait Airways online check-in possible for its customers.

Aviation Lease and Finance Company (ALAFCO) is an aircraft leasing company based on Islamic principles it assists various airlines and corporate entities in acquiring aircrafts on lease. Some of its clients include - Royal Jordanian, Malaysia Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Air Europa, Turkish Airlines, among many others.

It has had numerous alliances over the years with Shorouk Air, Jet Airways, and Trans World Airlines (TWA). Currently, it has codeshare agreements with Alitalia, Ethiopian Airlines and Yemenia.
